I have been in love with thrifting for about four years now, the hardships of being a middle-class campus student had me figuring out how to ensure sustainability and survival on my meager finances. Having financially grown quite a bit from the time I was a freshman my thrifting experience has led me to embrace a minimalist lifestyle which has been a holy grail of sorts especially in my current pursuit for financial success. I have learnt some valuable lessons, tips and tricks for this kind of shopping which I will go into detail.

Splurge does  not equal class

I have been in love with thrifting for about four years now which is from the time I joined campus. The hardships of being a middle-class campus student had me figuring out how to ensure sustainability and survival on my meager finances. Okay, hold up ... just to be clear I am not saying that I only thrift because I can’t afford high end stuff! On the contrary I have financially grown quite a bit from the time I was a freshman up to now and I can occasionally splurge on expensive stuff when I’m feeling myself which is rarely by the way and justifiably so. Anyway, lemme explain myself...

Since beginning this journey, I have learnt some valuable lessons, tips and tricks for this kind of shopping which I will go into detail later. First, let’s be real…thrifting is not for everyone. It can be time consuming and hectic at the start but once you have the experience and made sure to live and learn about the process you cannot go back. Honestly, my thrifting experience is what led me to embracing a minimalist lifestyle which has been a holy grail of sorts especially in my current pursuit for financial success. Here are a few key points I put together to help you understand why thrifting is the trade for any minimalist worth their pennies.

1. Promotes Sustainable Fashion

In the world of fashion, I have come to the conclusion that there is nothing as annoying as trends. I call them ‘street uniforms’ and they come and go so quick thus countering financial savings. I mean these items usually cost a pretty penny and then end up having the lowest lifecycle in the market! It honestly beats logic why so many people usually succumb to the pressure of impulse buying trends and even so you notice it’s the lower and a few middle tier income earners as opposed to high tier people with money to spare. For minimalists who understand the importance of knowing when and where to splurge their hard-earned cash, this is where we draw lines. Creating a sustainable wardrobe is about slowing down in fashion and reducing fast fashion demand. What better way to do it than by starting from a place stocked up with slow fashion brands? Thrifting is the problem solver guys!

2. Lower Prices Compared To Buying From Department Stores

There is a common misconception that expensive equals high quality. This is not entirely true especially in light of the present-day strategic marketing techniques. There are so many upcoming brands out here with overpriced products and really good outlooks that can effectively deceive the eye. These days you need a queer eye and loads of experience to be able to tell apart real from fake. This alone is a valid reason why thrifting is a much safer option to avoid being hassled when shopping. More so why spend a lot of money on new stuff if you can still get in shape and good quality stuff from elsewhere! Normally, second hand clothes have a drastically reduced price even for some high-end brands which you may not find affordable otherwise.

3. A Full Proof For Fancy and Unique Pieces

When thrifting you are always bound to come across pieces with completely unique designs which you can rest assured won’t be a fast fashion uniform on the streets. This pushes for owning your looks in an ever-innovative fashion world.

4. Creative Expression

It allows you the wild freedom of picking looks that you want to try out without having to make a price commitment. Thrifting is a good way to save your coins when shopping to attain fire looks for less.

5. Burried Treasure

When thrifting its common to find high value pieces tucked within and waiting to be discovered. This calls for time, patience and a queer eye but worth all the efforts in the end.

6. High Quality Items For Less

This aspect could be relative depending on one’s thrifting experience because it calls for prowess and a good eye. The trick here is to go for trustworthy online thrift brands who have already done the scouring donkey work for you at the local markets and second-hand stores to make sure that you can conveniently access the gold of the piles. However, finding ‘THE’ brands is also work in itself but assuredly worth investing your time in.
